Day 5 of 9

Patience in suffering and daily self-denial

From the Novena to St. Therese of Lisieux (the Little Flower)

Sacred Scripture: Romans 8:18

Meditation for Day 5

Therese described her penances as simple: breaking her own self-will, keeping back a sharp reply, and doing little kindnesses to those around her. She understood that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared to the glory that is to be revealed, and she embraced every small cross as a spiritual treasure. On this fifth day we ask the Little Flower to help us bear patiently the trials of daily life, using each humiliation and inconvenience as an occasion to grow closer to God.

Daily Novena Prayer (recited every day)

Closing Prayer

O Lord, You have said: Unless you become as little children you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven; grant us, we beg You, so to follow, in humility and simplicity of heart, the footsteps of the Virgin blessed Therese, that we may attain to an everlasting reward. Amen.

Concluding prayers: Many novena traditions add one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be at the close of each day's prayer.
