Catholic Examination of Conscience

An examination of conscience is a prayerful review of one's life in the light of God's word and the teaching of the Catholic Church, undertaken before the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Catechism teaches that ‘reception of this sacrament ought to be prepared for by an examination of conscience made in the light of the Word of God’ (CCC 1454).

Choose the variant best suited to your state of life. Each examination is sourced from the Church's traditional confessional manuals, the USCCB, and CCC paragraphs 2052-2557 on the Decalogue. After examining yourself, pray an Act of Contrition and proceed to confession — see our guide to how to go to confession.
