Day 2 of 9

In the Midst of Family Suffering

From the St. Dymphna Novena

Sacred Scripture: Psalm 34:18

Meditation for Day 2

Tradition holds that after the death of her mother, Dymphna's father was overcome by grief, and his mind gave way to a deep disorder. Much of Dymphna's suffering arose within her own family.

For all whose anxiety and pain come from within the home, ask Saint Dymphna's intercession; the Lord, says the psalm, 'is close to the brokenhearted.'

Daily Novena Prayer (recited every day)

Philippians 4:6-7

Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Saint Paul's words on peace amid anxiety (New American Bible) may be prayed as the daily closing of the novena.

Concluding prayers: Many novena traditions add one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be at the close of each day's prayer.
