Day 5 of 9

Reparation for offences against the Heart of Christ

From the Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Sacred Scripture: Lamentations 1:12

Meditation for Day 5

The fifth day of the novena is dedicated to reparation. Christ revealed to St. Margaret Mary that his Heart was wounded most deeply by the ingratitude and indifference of those whom he had loved.

The practice of reparation — offering acts of love and penance to console the wounded Heart of Christ — is at the centre of the First Friday devotion. Today's prayer offers small sacrifices of the day in atonement for sins against love.

Daily Novena Prayer (recited every day)

Daily Closing Prayer — Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I consecrate to you my person and my life, my actions, trials, and sufferings, that my entire being may henceforth only be employed in loving, honoring, and glorifying you. This is my unchangeable will: to belong entirely to you and to do all things for the love of you. I renounce with all my heart whatever is displeasing to you. Amen.

Pope Leo XIII consecrated the entire human race to the Sacred Heart on June 11, 1899, in the encyclical Annum Sacrum.

Concluding prayers: Many novena traditions add one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be at the close of each day's prayer.
