Day 3 of 9

The love of the Heart of Christ for his Mother

From the Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Sacred Scripture: John 19:26-27

Meditation for Day 3

The third day meditates on the love between the Heart of Christ and the Immaculate Heart of his Mother. From the cross, Jesus gave his Mother to the Beloved Disciple — and through him, to the whole Church.

Catholic devotion has long united the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, especially through the messages of Fatima (1917) and the consecrations that have followed. Today's prayer asks Mary's intercession to be conformed more closely to her Son's Heart.

Daily Novena Prayer (recited every day)

Daily Closing Prayer — Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I consecrate to you my person and my life, my actions, trials, and sufferings, that my entire being may henceforth only be employed in loving, honoring, and glorifying you. This is my unchangeable will: to belong entirely to you and to do all things for the love of you. I renounce with all my heart whatever is displeasing to you. Amen.

Pope Leo XIII consecrated the entire human race to the Sacred Heart on June 11, 1899, in the encyclical Annum Sacrum.

Concluding prayers: Many novena traditions add one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be at the close of each day's prayer.
