Day 5 of 9

For mothers, families, and the protection of the home

From the Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help

Sacred Scripture: John 19:26-27

Meditation for Day 5

At the foot of the Cross, Jesus entrusted his beloved disciple — and through him all of humanity — to his Mother's care: 'Woman, here is your son.' From that moment Mary became the mother of every Christian household. As patroness of mothers and of all in need, Our Lady of Perpetual Help watches with special love over the family, the cradle of faith. On this fifth day, bring to her every marriage under strain, every child in danger, and every parent who labours in love, asking that her perpetual help shelter every home under her mantle.

Daily Novena Prayer (recited every day)

Closing Prayer

Mother of Perpetual Help, you have been blessed and favoured by God. You became not only the Mother of the Redeemer, but Mother of the redeemed as well. We come to you today as your loving children. Watch over us and take care of us. As you held the Child Jesus in your loving arms, so take us in your arms. Be a mother ready at every moment to help us. For God who is mighty has done great things for you, and God's mercy is from age to age on those who love God. Intercede for us, dear Mother, in obtaining pardon for our sins, love for Jesus, final perseverance, and the grace always to call upon you, Mother of Perpetual Help.

Concluding prayers: Many novena traditions add one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be at the close of each day's prayer.
