For forgiveness of sins and a spirit of true repentance
From the Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help
Sacred Scripture: Luke 1:77-78
Meditation for Day 2
Zechariah prophesied that the Messiah would give his people 'knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God.' Mary carried that Saviour in her arms and now carries our repentant souls to him. The traditional prayer taught by the Redemptorists begs Mary that 'in the assaults of hell I may ever run to thy protection,' for it is precisely our weakness and our past failures that make her motherly help most necessary. Let sorrow for sin be the gift we bring on this second day.Daily Novena Prayer (recited every day)
Closing Prayer
Mother of Perpetual Help, you have been blessed and favoured by God. You became not only the Mother of the Redeemer, but Mother of the redeemed as well. We come to you today as your loving children. Watch over us and take care of us. As you held the Child Jesus in your loving arms, so take us in your arms. Be a mother ready at every moment to help us. For God who is mighty has done great things for you, and God's mercy is from age to age on those who love God. Intercede for us, dear Mother, in obtaining pardon for our sins, love for Jesus, final perseverance, and the grace always to call upon you, Mother of Perpetual Help.
Concluding prayers: Many novena traditions add one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be at the close of each day's prayer.
