Day 5 of 9

The souls of separated brethren

From the Divine Mercy Novena

Sacred Scripture: John 17:20-21

Meditation for Day 5

On the fifth day, Jesus asked that the souls of separated brethren — Christians not in full communion with the Catholic Church — be brought to his mercy. He desires the unity for which he prayed at the Last Supper.

The Second Vatican Council, in the decree Unitatis Redintegratio, taught that this unity is a gift of the Holy Spirit and a duty of every Catholic. Today's prayer is for the healing of divisions among Christians.

Daily Novena Prayer (recited every day)

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy

Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

St. Faustina taught that the Chaplet of Divine Mercy should accompany the novena each day. The full chaplet uses ordinary Rosary beads.

Concluding prayers: Many novena traditions add one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be at the close of each day's prayer.
