Day 8 of 9

For souls who received great graces but responded poorly

From the Novena for the Holy Souls in Purgatory

Sacred Scripture: Luke 12:48

Meditation for Day 8

On this eighth day we pray especially for those souls who were given much — faith, sacraments, holy families, religious vocations — yet whose lives fell short of what grace made possible. Our Lord warns: Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required (Lk 12:48). In Purgatory, the sight of graces left unused adds its own weight to their purification, though divine mercy has spared them from the full consequence their sins deserved. We commend these souls to God's fatherly patience, and we examine our own hearts, asking how faithfully we have responded to the many graces bestowed upon us.

Daily Novena Prayer (recited every day)

Closing Prayer

O God, the author of mercy, the lover of the salvation of mankind; we address thy clemency, in behalf of our brethren, relations, and benefactors, who are departed this life, that by the intercession of blessed Mary, ever virgin, and of all the saints, thou wouldst receive them into the enjoyment of eternal happiness; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Concluding prayers: Many novena traditions add one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be at the close of each day's prayer.
