About St. Joseph

The Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral in Bardstown, Kentucky holds a singular place in American Catholic history: its cornerstone was laid in 1816, making it the first Catholic cathedral built west of the Allegheny Mountains. Elevated to a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 2001, the church houses paintings gifted by King Louis-Philippe of France — works by Murillo, Van Dyck, and Van Eyck — along with contributions from Pope Leo XII and King Francis I of the Two Sicilies.
