St. Alphonsus Parish in New Orleans was founded in 1843 and has been served by the Redemptorists ever since. The parish church, St. Mary's Assumption, is home to the National Shrine of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos, C.Ss.R., the beloved Redemptorist priest who died in 1867 caring for yellow fever patients and whose remains rest in the church. An active "Save St. Mary's" campaign is working to restore the 180-year-old landmark, a cornerstone of the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
