Founded in 1890 by Volga German settlers who had come to the Kansas plains from Russia, St. Catherine Parish in Catharine built its distinctive stone church in 1892 — the stone quarried and hauled by the parishioners themselves. Now served by Fr. Earl Befort, OFM Cap., and part of the Diocese of Salina, the church is notable for six pairs of angel statues adorning its interior and continues to celebrate a single Sunday morning Mass for a tight-knit rural community rooted in German-Russian heritage.
