History & Background

The Fatima Prayer was revealed to the three shepherd children — Lucia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto — at Fátima, Portugal, on July 13, 1917, during the third apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. According to Lucia's memoirs, Our Lady requested that this prayer be added to the Rosary after each decade. The prayer was approved by Pope Pius XII and later endorsed by Pope Paul VI's Apostolic Exhortation Marialis Cultus (1974). The apparitions at Fátima were definitively approved by the local bishop in 1930. Pope John Paul II, who attributed his survival of the 1981 assassination attempt to Our Lady of Fátima, canonized Francisco and Jacinta Marto on May 13, 2017 — the 100th anniversary of the apparitions.
