Holy Days of Obligation in New Zealand — 2027
Besides every Sunday, New Zealand observes 2 holy days of obligation, set by the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference with the approval of the Holy See. Here is each one with its 2027 date and whether the obligation binds this year.

How the rule works
New Zealand observes two holy days of obligation besides Sundays: Christmas and the Assumption (New Zealand's patronal feast). The NZCBC's standing statement says the obligation applies whenever they fall, including Saturdays and Mondays; however, the Conference sometimes transfers the Assumption to the adjacent Sunday by an explicit decision for a particular year (as it has done for 2026) — the per-year verdicts on this page reflect those published decisions.
Celebrated on Sunday in New Zealand
These solemnities are transferred to a Sunday, so they are covered by the ordinary Sunday obligation:
- The Epiphany of the Lord — Sunday, January 3. Celebrated on the Sunday closest to 6 January in New Zealand (National Liturgy Office).
- The Ascension of the Lord — Sunday, May 9. Celebrated on Sunday in New Zealand.
- The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) — Sunday, May 30. Celebrated on Sunday in New Zealand.
Not days of obligation in New Zealand
These feasts of canon 1246 are kept as solemnities on their dates, without a Mass obligation:
- Mary, the Holy Mother of God (1 January)
- All Saints (1 November)
- The Immaculate Conception (8 December)
- Saint Joseph (19 March)
- Saints Peter and Paul (29 June)
Fasting & abstinence in New Zealand
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting and abstinence in New Zealand. Abstinence from meat applies to everyone age 14 and above; fasting applies to everyone age 18-59 (National Liturgy Office). Under the universal law, every Friday of the year is a penitential day (canon 1250).
The NZCBC has not published a national norm specifying particular forms of ordinary-Friday penance; the universal law of canon 1250 (Fridays are penitential days) applies.
