The Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle on Rhode Island Avenue NW is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Washington and one of the capital's most storied Catholic landmarks — it was here that President John F. Kennedy's funeral Mass was celebrated in November 1963. A multicultural parish restored in 2000–2003, the cathedral hosts daily Masses, a Spanish Sunday liturgy, Ministerio Hispano, a young-adults community, and extensive social-justice outreach including English-language classes for newcomers.
