Founded on December 5, 1889, Our Lady of Mount Carmel—affectionately called "The Little Cathedral of Down Neck"—has anchored Newark's historic Ironbound neighborhood for more than 135 years. The parish traces its roots to Italian immigrants (the church is formally named Chiesa della Madonna del Carmine), and today celebrates Mass in four languages: English, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese, reflecting the neighborhood's continuing immigrant vitality. A daily 8:30 AM Mass with a Portuguese Rosary afterward, along with a summer English/Italian bilingual Sunday Mass, distinguish this Archdiocese of Newark parish as a living bridge between generations of Catholic newcomers.
