Tracing its roots to 1803 as the first non-mission parish built for Spanish settlers in California, the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph in downtown San Jose was designated a Minor Basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1997. The cathedral offers daily noon Mass Monday through Friday alongside four Sunday Masses in English and Spanish, and is home to an 1886 Odell pipe organ that remains the only such instrument surviving in its original condition in the United States.
