Established in 1934 by Father Harold Purcell as a Catholic mission to Montgomery's African-American community, City of Saint Jude holds a singular place in American history: on March 24, 1965, the parish served as the final overnight stop for the Selma to Montgomery civil rights marchers before they reached the Alabama State Capitol — the only institution in the city willing to welcome them. Today the parish within the Archdiocese of Mobile continues that legacy of welcome, offering daily Mass, a bilingual Sunday schedule with an English and a noon Spanish Mass, and ministries that serve the surrounding neighborhood.
