Santa Cruz Catholic Church in Buda was founded in 1941 by Father Alfredo Mendez, CSC, to serve the Mexican-American families of northern Hays County, and became a Diocese of Austin parish in 1987. Its current 1,000-seat church was dedicated in 2001, and the original 1941 stone church was rebuilt nearby as the Our Lady of San Juan Chapel. Today the parish of nearly 4,000 families celebrates Spanish-language Sunday Masses and an English Saturday vigil.
