About Basilica of St. Lawrence

The Basilica of St. Lawrence in downtown Asheville, North Carolina is one of the most architecturally significant Catholic churches in the American South. Designed by Spanish-born engineer Rafael Guastavino and consecrated in 1909, it features what is reputed to be the largest unsupported elliptical dome in North America, built entirely of tile and brick without steel reinforcement. A designated minor basilica within the Diocese of Charlotte, it offers three Sunday Masses and draws visitors as much for its remarkable Guastavino tile vaulting as for its active parish life.
