Established in 1959 as the Diocese of Salina's last county-seat parish, St. Mary in Smith Center, Kansas grew quickly from 50 founding families to over 200 members, prompting construction of a new church completed in 1997. Fr. Charles Oppong leads the community, which also serves mission parishes in Mankato and Esbon, anchoring Catholic life across a wide stretch of northwest Kansas.
