One of the oldest Catholic churches in Nevada, St. Mary in the Mountains was originally built in 1860 to serve Irish immigrants working the Comstock silver mines and rebuilt in brick after the Great Fire of 1875. The historic Virginia City landmark — whose construction was overseen by Fr. Patrick Manogue, later the first Bishop of Sacramento — houses a museum, a gift shop, and an 1898 William Schuelke pipe organ. Today it offers a Sunday Mass and a Wednesday morning Mass within the Diocese of Reno.
