Sacred Heart on Sugar Island, Michigan traces its roots to Jesuit missionary Father William Gagnieur, who founded it in 1911; the current church was blessed in 1928 and is the only one of the island's original four parishes still offering regular services. About 40 families make up the core community, supplemented by summer visitors, with the pastor traveling from Sault Ste. Marie by ferry each week for the Saturday evening vigil Mass.
