Founded in 1888 following a mission to Saint Paul's African American community, St. Peter Claver holds the distinction of being the first predominantly Black parish in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. Among its founding members was Frederick L. McGhee, a pioneering civil rights attorney, and Fr. Stephen Louis Theobald — the first Black priest ordained for the Archdiocese — served as pastor for 22 years. The parish continues to celebrate daily morning Mass and a Saturday vigil as a welcoming faith home for all.
