America's first Catholic cathedral, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on North Charles Street in Baltimore was designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe and its cornerstone was laid in 1806 by Bishop John Carroll. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1971, the Neoclassical basilica serves the Archdiocese of Baltimore with daily Mass — including morning and noon Masses on weekdays — and three Sunday Masses.
