Established in 1800 by French Catholic émigrés, the Cathedral Basilica of Saint John the Baptist is the mother church of the Diocese of Savannah and one of Georgia's oldest Catholic communities. The current French Gothic structure — completed in 1876, rebuilt after an 1898 fire, and rededicated in 1900 — features more than 50 stained glass windows crafted by Innsbruck glassmakers and white Italian marble altars by Baldwin & Price of Baltimore. Daily Mass is offered twice on weekdays, with three Sunday Masses including a solemn 10 a.m. with incense.
