St. Peter's in Harpers Ferry is Jefferson County's oldest Catholic parish, with its cornerstone laid in 1830 and the church dedicated in 1833 on a rocky outcrop above the lower town. The neo-Gothic stone building, rebuilt in 1896, was the only Harpers Ferry church left undamaged during the Civil War and is today a designated historic chapel within the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston. Sunday Mass continues to be celebrated here, and docent-led tours in period costume are offered May through November.
