About St. Mary Ruthenian Catholic Church
Founded in 1906 to serve Eastern European coal miners in the mountains of Cambria County, St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church in Beaverdale, Pennsylvania celebrates the Divine Liturgy in the Byzantine tradition. The church became an independent parish in 1921 and was adorned between 1947 and 1957 with Byzantine-style murals, side altars, and stained glass windows. Today, under Very Rev. James Spontak, the Saturday afternoon Divine Liturgy alternates weekly between the Beaverdale and nearby Dunlo communities.
