St. George the Great Martyr

Saint George the Great Martyr is a Melkite Greek-Catholic parish in Birmingham with roots stretching back nearly a century, founded by Lebanese and Syrian immigrants who came as merchants during the city's iron-industry boom. The parish traces its spiritual heritage to Antioch and worships in the Byzantine tradition, carrying a history that includes a former pastor, Archbishop Joseph Raya, who marched alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during Birmingham's civil rights era. Today it welcomes all who are drawn to Eastern Catholic worship, describing itself as a community with Middle Eastern roots and a distinctly Southern heart.
