The Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Philadelphia is the mother church of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia, founded in 1886. The breathtaking 1966 cathedral was designed by Julian K. Jastremsky in authentic Byzantine style, with a 100-foot central dome covered in 22-karat gold Venetian mosaic tiles depicting Christ Pantocrator — modeled after Constantinople's Hagia Sophia. Pope John Paul II visited on October 4, 1979, and a stone from St. Peter's tomb, gifted by Pope Paul VI, was placed in the cornerstone. Sunday Divine Liturgies are celebrated in both English and Ukrainian.
