About St. Augustine

Founded in 1841 by free people of color in New Orleans' historic Tremé neighborhood, St. Augustine is the oldest African American Catholic parish in the United States. Its pews were famously purchased by free Black Catholics to provide dedicated space for enslaved worshippers — an act known as the "War of the Pews" — and in 1842 Blessed Henriette Delille founded the Sisters of the Holy Family here. Part of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, the parish gathers for Sunday Mass at 10:00 AM and a Wednesday evening Mass preceded by the Rosary.
