About St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church
Founded in 1908 by ten Catholic families in the northwoods of Wisconsin, St. John the Evangelist in Birchwood grew from a small wooden chapel into a brick church dedicated in August 1950 by Bishop Meyer of Superior. The interior features a hand-carved birch-wood altar and canopy — an estimated 2,000 hours of craftsmanship — and a historic bell rescued from the abandoned Pribram settlement. Today the parish belongs to the "Four Parishes One Faith" cluster in the Diocese of Superior, offering Sunday and weekday morning Mass.
