Founded in 1842, Mary Help of Christians is one of southern Illinois's oldest Catholic communities, serving Chester under the Diocese of Belleville in partnership with St. Mary Church in Ellis Grove. The parish, staffed by a Vincentian pastor, gathers for Sunday Mass at 10:00 a.m., weekday Masses on Monday and Wednesday mornings, and a Saturday vigil at 4:00 p.m., while also supporting Catholic education through St. Mary's Grade School.
