The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception — whose foundation stone was laid in 1920 — is the preeminent Catholic church in the United States and one of the largest in the world, with more than 80 chapels and oratories honoring Our Lady and representing Catholic communities from around the globe. Open 365 days a year at 400 Michigan Avenue NE in Washington, D.C., it offers Mass multiple times daily (including six times on Sundays) and welcomes millions of pilgrims and visitors each year under the patronage of Mary Immaculate, declared patroness of the United States by the American bishops in 1846.
