Frequently Asked Questions

How is the date of Easter calculated?

Easter is the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon that occurs on or after March 21 (the Church’s fixed date for the spring equinox). The Catholic Church uses the Gregorian calendar to compute it, so Easter can fall between March 22 and April 25.

Why do Catholic and Orthodox Easter sometimes differ?

The Eastern Orthodox churches calculate Easter using the older Julian calendar, so their date of Easter often differs from the Western (Gregorian) date by one to several weeks.
