Station 1 of 14 — Traditional Stations of the Cross

Jesus Is Condemned to Death

Scripture: John 18:28 – 19:16; Matthew 27:11-26

V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee.

R. Because by Thy holy Cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

Meditation

Pilate, the Roman governor, questions Jesus and finds no fault in him. Yet, faced with the growing fury of the crowd and fearing a political uprising, he hands Jesus over to be crucified. He washes his hands before the crowd in a futile gesture, declaring himself innocent of this just man's blood — yet his act of cowardice condemns the innocent Son of God to death.

Jesus receives the unjust sentence in silence. He does not appeal to Pilate's reason, nor does he call upon legions of angels to rescue him. He accepts the condemnation freely, because he knows that this is the path the Father has set before him for the redemption of the world. In this station, we see how injustice, fear, and human weakness conspire against the innocent — and how divine love chooses to bear it all rather than abandon the children it came to save.

We are invited to stand with Jesus before the judgment seat and examine our own hearts. How often do we choose the convenient path over the just one? How often do we wash our hands of hard truths? Jesus, condemned by men, remains the judge of the living and the dead — and his sentence upon us is mercy.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you were condemned by an unjust judge though innocent of all sin. Grant us the courage to stand for truth even when the crowd demands otherwise, and to trust in your justice when the world offers none. Amen.
How to pray this station: Genuflect or bow before the station image. Recite the versicle and response above. Read the meditation. Pray an Our Father, a Hail Mary, and a Glory Be. Then proceed to the next station.
