Patron Saint of Unborn

Category: Marginalized & Vulnerable

The Blessed Virgin Mary and Ss. Gerard Majella, Raymond Nonnatus, and Gianna Beretta Molla are invoked by Catholics for the protection of unborn children. St. Gianna Beretta Molla, a 20th-century Italian physician and mother who chose to continue a high-risk pregnancy rather than seek treatment that might have endangered her unborn child, dying shortly after her daughter's birth in 1962, is especially associated with the pro-life movement. She was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2004.

No single saint has been formally declared the universal patron of the unborn, but St. Gianna's combination of professional medical identity and personal witness makes her the most frequently cited patron in this context in contemporary Catholic practice.

Primary Patron
Our Lady of Guadalupe
Feast Day
December 12

Our Lady of Guadalupe is invoked as patron of the unborn. The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe commemorates the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Saint Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin on the hill of Tepeyac, north of Mexico City, between December 9 and 12, 1531, ten years after the fall of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan to Hernan Cortes. In the four apparitions, Mary - speaking in Nahuatl, dressed as a young pregnant Indigenous noblewoman, with the moon under her feet and rays of the sun behind her - identified herself as the perfect ever-Virgin holy Mary, mother of the very true God by whom one lives, and asked that a church be built on Tepeyac for the consolation of the Indigenous peoples and all who would seek her intercession. On December 12, when Juan Diego brought to Bishop Juan de Zumarraga the Castilian roses gathered on the wintry hill at Mary's instruction, his ayate-fiber tilma was found to bear the image now venerated in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City - the most-visited Marian shrine in the world. The Holy Innocents
Feast Day
December 28

The Holy Innocents is invoked as patron of the unborn. The Feast of the Holy Innocents commemorates the male children of Bethlehem and its surroundings, two years old and under, killed by Herod the Great in his attempt to destroy the infant Christ after the Magi failed to return to him with information about the child's whereabouts (Matthew 2:16-18). Matthew sees the slaughter as a fulfillment of Jeremiah 31:15, which he applies to Rachel weeping for her children. Sources: https://www.usccb.org/resources/2026cal.pdf.
