Day 9 of 9

The fruits of the Holy Spirit

From the Novena to the Holy Spirit (Pentecost Novena)

Sacred Scripture: Galatians 5:22-23

Meditation for Day 9

The ninth and final day, the eve of Pentecost, asks that the gifts received bear fruit. St. Paul names the fruits of the Spirit: charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, and chastity.

These fruits are the sign that the Spirit has truly taken hold of the soul. The novena ends as the first one did: with the disciples waiting in the upper room, ready to receive whatever the Father will send.

Daily Novena Prayer (recited every day)

Veni Sancte Spiritus (Come, Holy Spirit)

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth. O God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

This is the traditional collect for Pentecost, found in the Roman Missal and used as the daily closing of the novena.

Concluding prayers: Many novena traditions add one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be at the close of each day's prayer.
