History & Background

Belief in personal guardian angels is part of Catholic tradition rooted in Scripture (Mt 18:10; Acts 12:15) and the Fathers of the Church. The brief prayer «Angele Dei» is traced to the devotional writings of Reginald of Canterbury (d. 1109) and other medieval monks. It was popularized throughout Europe in the late medieval period and was included in early catechisms taught to children. St. Pius X encouraged its use among young Catholics. The prayer is listed in the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (2005), Appendix A. The Feast of the Guardian Angels is celebrated on October 2 in the Roman Calendar, confirmed under Pope Clement X in 1670.
