Patron Saint of Travelers

Category: Travel & Pilgrimage

Travel in the ancient world was dangerous, and Christians quickly began invoking heavenly protection for those making journeys. St. Christopher, venerated from at least the 5th century, became the most widely recognized patron of travelers in the Latin West. St. Raphael the Archangel, whose name means "God heals," accompanied Tobiah on a long journey in the Book of Tobit and is likewise invoked for travelers and the sick.

The practice of carrying a St. Christopher medal in a vehicle or keeping one on a keychain remains common among Catholics worldwide, reflecting the enduring tradition of seeking saintly protection for safe journeys.
