Patron Saint of Protection

Category: Spiritual Life & Devotion

For protection from spiritual and physical harm, Catholics turn above all to Saint Michael the Archangel, the prince of the heavenly host and the great defender against the powers of evil. Alongside him, the Holy Guardian Angels — whom God appoints to watch over each person — and Saint Benedict, whose medal is the Church's most widely used sacramental against evil, are the classic patrons of protection.

These intercessors are invoked through the Communion of Saints and the ministry of the angels, asking God's defense against danger, temptation, and the snares of the devil. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (no. 336) teaches that from its beginning to death human life is surrounded by the watchful care and intercession of the angels.

Patron Saints of Protection

Popularly invoked patronage — widely recognized in Catholic tradition.

Primary Patron
Saint Michael the Archangel
Feast Day
September 29

Saint Michael the Archangel is the foremost patron of protection. Scripture presents him as the leader of the angels who cast down the dragon (Revelation 12:7-9), and the Church has long invoked him as defender against the devil — most famously in the Prayer to Saint Michael composed by Pope Leo XIII. The Holy Guardian Angels
Feast Day
October 2

The Holy Guardian Angels are invoked for protection because, as the Church teaches, God entrusts to each person an angel to guard and guide them (cf. Psalm 91:11; Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 336). The traditional Guardian Angel prayer — 'Angel of God, my guardian dear' — asks this protection each day. Saint Benedict
Feast Day
July 11

Saint Benedict of Nursia, the father of Western monasticism, is invoked for protection chiefly through the Saint Benedict Medal and Cross — the Church's most widely used sacramental against evil — whose letters stand for a Latin prayer of protection and exorcism (Vade retro Satana, 'Step back, Satan').
