For protection from spiritual and physical harm, Catholics turn above all to Saint Michael the Archangel, the prince of the heavenly host and the great defender against the powers of evil. Alongside him, the Holy Guardian Angels — whom God appoints to watch over each person — and Saint Benedict, whose medal is the Church's most widely used sacramental against evil, are the classic patrons of protection.
These intercessors are invoked through the Communion of Saints and the ministry of the angels, asking God's defense against danger, temptation, and the snares of the devil. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (no. 336) teaches that from its beginning to death human life is surrounded by the watchful care and intercession of the angels.
