Patron Saint of Miscarriage

Category: Health & Illness

The Catholic Church has never decreed a single official patron saint of miscarriage, but parents who have lost a child before birth, and mothers anxious for a pregnancy, have for centuries turned to a number of saints whose lives touch the mystery of motherhood, the unborn, and grief borne in faith. Their intercession is sought through the doctrine of the Communion of Saints, by which the holy ones in heaven pray to God on our behalf.

The Church accompanies grieving parents with great tenderness. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (no. 1261) teaches that, although these little ones die without Baptism, the Church can only entrust them to the mercy of God, and that Jesus' own love for children allows us to hope for their salvation. The saints below are invoked both for the protection of mothers and children and for consolation in the sorrow of loss.

Patron Saints of Miscarriage

Popularly invoked patronage — widely recognized in Catholic tradition.

Primary Patron
Saint Gerard Majella
Feast Day
October 16

Saint Gerard Majella is the most widely invoked patron of expectant mothers and is traditionally called upon against miscarriage and for a safe delivery. A Redemptorist lay brother who died in 1755, he became associated with motherhood through an incident in which a handkerchief he left behind was credited, years later, with saving a woman in danger of death in childbirth. Mothers across the Catholic world pray his novena for the protection of their pregnancies. Sources: https://www.newadvent.org/cathen/06467c.htm.

Saint Gianna Beretta Molla
Feast Day
April 28

Saint Gianna Beretta Molla, a physician and mother canonised in 2004, is a patron of mothers, the unborn, and those facing difficult or dangerous pregnancies. Having herself known the sorrow of miscarriage before giving her own life for her fourth child, she is a powerful intercessor for women who carry the grief of pregnancy loss and for those who fear for the lives of their children. Saints Joachim and Anne
Feast Day
July 26

Saints Joachim and Anne, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, are invoked by couples who long for a child and by families carrying sorrow or anxiety. According to ancient tradition they conceived Mary only after many years of childlessness, and they are therefore a sign of hope and a source of comfort for parents who grieve a loss or wait in uncertainty.
