Patron Saint of Hospitals

Category: Health & Illness

Ss. Camillus de Lellis and John of God, both 16th-century founders of religious orders dedicated to hospital care, are the joint patrons of hospitals. Pope Leo XIII designated both as patrons of the sick, nurses, and hospitals — Camillus in 1886 and John of God in the same era. Camillus's red cross badge on his habit is considered one inspiration for the modern Red Cross.

St. Elizabeth of Hungary, a 13th-century queen who built hospitals and personally cared for the sick and poor, is also associated with hospital care and the work of mercy toward those who are ill.
