Ss. Cosmas and Damian, twin brothers and physicians who gave their medical services free of charge in early Christian Syria, are the principal patron saints of doctors and physicians. They were martyred during the Diocletianic persecution (c. 303) and have been venerated since the 4th century. Their feast day is September 26.

St. Luke the Evangelist, a physician by profession according to Col 4:14, is also widely invoked as patron of doctors, surgeons, and medical workers. His feast day is October 18.
