Patron Saint of Cooks

Category: Trades & Occupations

St. Lawrence, the Roman deacon martyred in 258 by being roasted on a gridiron, is the patron of cooks — a connection arising from the instrument of his martyrdom and from his legendary response to his torturers: "Turn me over, I'm done on this side." His feast day is August 10.

St. Martha of Bethany, the sister of Mary and Lazarus who "was busy with much serving" (Lk 10:40) when Jesus visited, is also a patron of cooks, hosts and hostesses, and domestic servants — her association rooted directly in the Gospel narrative.

Primary Patron
Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus
Feast Day
July 29

Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus is invoked as patron of cooks. The Memorial of Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus honors the three siblings of Bethany, the village two miles east of Jerusalem on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives, presented in the Gospels as friends of Jesus and as a privileged household of his earthly ministry. Saint John tells us, Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus (John 11:5).Martha is the figure of active service: she received the Lord into her house at the meal at Bethany, was busy about much serving (Luke 10:38-42), and was rebuked, gently, for being anxious and troubled about many things, while one thing alone is needful, the better part chosen by Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. Saint Lawrence of Rome
Feast Day
August 10

Saint Lawrence of Rome is invoked as patron of cooks. Saint Lawrence was one of the seven deacons of the Roman Church under Pope Saint Sixtus II and was martyred at Rome on August 10, 258, four days after his bishop. He is traditionally said to have come from the Roman province of Hispania Citerior, from a family of the modern Huesca in Aragon, but the earliest evidence (Saint Ambrose, Saint Augustine, the Roman Calendar) attests only his deaconate at Rome and his martyrdom there.Saint Ambrose of Milan, in his De officiis ministrorum (1.41) written about 391, gives the earliest extended narrative.
