Patron Saint of Aviators

Category: Science & Technology

Our Lady of Loreto was declared the patron of aviators by Pope Benedict XV in 1920, making this one of the earliest formal patronages connected with modern aviation. The Shrine of Loreto in central Italy, associated with the house of the Holy Family, became the focus of a papal declaration extending Mary's protection to those who fly.

St. Joseph of Cupertino, a 17th-century Conventual Franciscan whose mystical experiences included well-documented levitations witnessed by hundreds of people, is also popularly invoked by pilots and those who fly — his levitations in the air connecting him symbolically with flight.

Our Lady of Loreto
Feast Day
December 10

Our Lady of Loreto is invoked as patron of aviators. The Optional Memorial of Our Lady of Loreto commemorates the small stone house, the Santa Casa, venerated within the Basilica of the Holy House at Loreto on the Italian Adriatic coast. According to a tradition first attested in writing in the fifteenth century, the house was the dwelling of Mary at Nazareth where she received the Annunciation and the Holy Family lived after the return from Egypt; when the Holy Land fell definitively to Muslim forces in 1291, the Santa Casa is said to have been miraculously translated, first to Tersatto in Dalmatia (1291) and then to Loreto (1294).
