About this Devotion

Devotion to the Most Precious Blood of Jesus is among the most ancient in the Church, rooted in the sacrificial theology of the New Covenant. The Epistle to the Hebrews declares that Christ entered the Holy of Holies 'not with the blood of goats and calves, but with his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption' (Heb 9:12). The devotion was systematically revived in the early nineteenth century through the apostolate of Blessed Gaspar del Bufalo, founder of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood (C.PP.S.), who was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1954.

Pope Pius IX in 1849 extended the Feast of the Most Precious Blood to the universal Church (celebrated on July 1, later absorbed into the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ by Paul VI) and approved the chaplet with attached indulgences. The 33 beads represent the 33 years of Christ's earthly life; the 7 groups represent the seven sheddings of blood: the Circumcision, the Agony in the Garden, the Scourging, the Crowning with Thorns, the Way of the Cross, the Crucifixion, and the piercing of the side.

How to Pray Chaplet of the Most Precious Blood

You will need: 33 small red beads (years of Christ's life) divided into 7 groups; crucifix

1
Begin with the Sign of the Cross and the opening prayer: 'Almighty and eternal God, You appointed Your only-begotten Son as the Redeemer of the world and willed to be appeased by His Blood. Grant, we beseech You, that we may worthily adore this precious price of our salvation and through its power be safeguarded from the present evils and enjoy everlasting happiness in Heaven. Amen.'
2
For the First Mystery — the Blood shed at the Circumcision — pray the opening invocation and then 5 small beads with the prayer: 'Praise and thanksgiving be to Jesus, who by His Blood sealed the New Covenant.'
3
Continue through the seven sheddings of Blood: (1) Circumcision, (2) Agony in the Garden, (3) Scourging at the Pillar, (4) Crowning with Thorns, (5) Way of the Cross, (6) Crucifixion, (7) Piercing of the Side. For each, pray the large bead prayer followed by the small bead prayers.
4
On the large bead before each group, pray: 'O Eternal Father, I offer You the Blood of Jesus Christ in atonement for my sins and in supplication for the souls in Purgatory and for the needs of Holy Church.'
5
On each small bead, pray: 'By Your Precious Blood, O Jesus, save us.'
6
Close with the concluding prayer asking for the merits of the Precious Blood to be applied to the intentions of the faithful and the Holy Souls.

Promises & Indulgences

Pope Pius IX in 1849 approved the devotion and attached an indulgence. Pope Pius XII, in his 1960 encyclical Haurietis Aquas on devotion to the Sacred Heart, reaffirmed the Church's high esteem for devotion to the Precious Blood as one of the primary expressions of Eucharistic and redemptive theology. The indulgenced status of the chaplet is cited by EWTN in its devotional catalog.
