About this Devotion
The Infant Jesus of Prague is a 16-inch wax-coated wooden statue of the Christ Child dressed in royal robes, brought to Prague around 1628 as a gift to the Carmelite friars of Our Lady of Victory church by Princess Polyxena Lobkowicz. A tradition of miraculous favors associated with the statue became widespread following the difficult years of the Thirty Years' War, when the statue was restored and the Carmelites resumed its veneration. The statue's veneration received formal ecclesiastical recognition through the Archconfraternity of the Infant Jesus of Prague, and the devotion spread worldwide through the Carmelite Order.
The chaplet form developed within the Archconfraternity tradition. The three groups of beads represent the Holy Family and the three stages of Christ's earthly life; the three large beads honor the Trinity. The Prague Carmelite friars (P. Frantisek, O.Carm.) published an authoritative devotional guide to the chaplet. EWTN hosts the traditional English text. The wax coating over the wooden core has been renewed several times, but the image is venerated as the same original statue that arrived in Prague in the 1620s.

Promises & Indulgences
The tradition of the Infant Jesus of Prague devotion holds that special graces are attached to the veneration of the image and the recitation of the chaplet, particularly for the protection of children, families, and those in material need. The Carmelite custodians document numerous reported miraculous favors associated with the Prague statue over four centuries of veneration. No formal papal bull of promises exists, but the Archconfraternity's canonical establishment confers upon it the Church's approbation as a legitimate and enriched devotion.
